A seminar was organized at the Department of Microbiology, University of Dhaka, to disseminate information and create awareness about the 2019 novel Coronavirus (nCoronavirus). The seminar was jointly organized by the Bangladesh Society of Microbiologists and the Department of Microbiology, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. The speakers were renowned scientists, Dr. Mustafizur Rahman, Senior Scientist, Virology Laboratory, ICDDR, B and Dr. Saif Ullah Munshi, Chairman, Department of Virology, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU). Participants were from various departments and institutes across Dhaka city.
The novel Coronavirus has not been reported in Bangladesh yet. However, the fact that the virus can be transmitted from person to person within a short time is alarming and requires public awareness about the virus. ‘It is a super-spreader’, said Dr. Munshi and emphasized on the need toadhere to basic hygienic practices. The young and immunocompromised individuals and those with diabetes, cardiac disease and other debilitating conditions are at risk of infection. Asymptomatic carriers are an important source of infection and care should be taken when symptoms such as fever, cough and respiratory difficulties arise.
As far as Bangladesh preparedness is concerned, Dr. Rahman considered the virus a ‘less deadly virus’ compared to other respiratory viruses and said the Bangladeshi summer is a boon to demean the virus. He also mentioned that ‘we are well prepared to fight the virus’ should a case of Coronavirus arises. However, Dr. Munshiwas not as optimistic and said “we have to be well prepared for whatever comesin terms of health related supports” and advised that ‘we should adhere to basic hygienic practices to ensure safety’.
The seminar created awareness among the participants and encouraged exchange of views among researchers and medical personnel in the fight against Coronavirus.
